Choosing a Rehab Facility for Drug Abuse Treatment
You may not know exactly what to look for when choosing a rehab facility for drug abuse treatment and that’s alright, you’re probably more focused on yourself and your own situations, consequences, and motivations for change. In this state of confusion, how can anyone expect you to know what’s best for you?
According to the SAMHSA, “Motivation can be understood not as something that one has but rather as something one does. It involves recognizing a problem, searching for a way to change, and then beginning and sticking with that change strategy.”
You have already started your road to recovery by recognizing the need for change. Now, you want to look for the rehab facility that will positively motivate you toward the best interest of self.
Important Considerations
You may be inundated with options of settings, amenities, complimentary program offers, locations, payment schedules and costs, durations, withdrawals and/or medication assistance, etc. These are all important considerations because according to the NIDA,” The goal of drug abuse treatment is to stop drug use and allow people to lead active lives in the family, workplace, and community. One continual challenge, however, is keeping patients in treatment long enough for them to achieve this goal.”
Recommendations
The SAMHSA recommends choosing a rehab facility for drug abuse treatment “in those settings that least interferes with their civil rights and freedom to participate in society.” You may think you lack motivation to change or without specialized help, your success will be limited and you may be right if you have long term or chronic substance abuse problems, co-existing physical or mental health issues, or a lack of support in your home environment.
The majority of drug abuse treatments are provided through outpatient settings with comparable delivery methods and types of treatment found in inpatient settings. Better outcomes rely on staying longer in treatment, complying with recommendations, having an individual counselor, receiving proper medications and services for medical, psychiatric, and family needs, and participating in behavioral interventions and self-help groups such as A.A. or N.A.
Detox
Detox is the first step in recovery and acute withdrawals are usually the most concerning for both you and the treatment provider. You will want to choose a rehab facility that can help you manage the withdrawals safely and with the most comfort. This may require an inpatient stay for a short term or longer depending on the assessment levels of your needs. Be honest with the provider regarding histories and personal issues so they can make the appropriate detox plans accordingly.
